Marathon Runner

I’m going to run a marathon

I’ve paid my entry fee

I’ve got my race number

And athletically

I’m ready to run a marathon

I’m in great shape

I’ll probably cross the line first

And when I break the winners’ tape

Be interviewed on the telly

Become a celebrity

But I’ll play down my easy victory

With feigned modesty

I’m going to run a marathon

I’m on the start line

With ten thousand other runners

With ambition

like mine

Ten thousand other runners

Looking super fit

Looking super confident

And ready to commit

They’re going to run a marathon

I’m going home

I’ll never be an athlete

I lack the chromosome

I’ll watch the race on telly

With a cake and pot of tea

I’m a couch-potato runner

Run a marathon

Not me
